Wedge Volume Calculator
Need help calculating wedge-shaped objects? Whether you’re building a ramp or planning construction, our volume of wedge calculator makes complex math simple and precise.
A wooden doorstop – a perfect example of a wedge. If a carpenter needs to create multiple doorstops, calculating volume helps find amount of material required.
A doorstop measuring 6 inches in length, with a 3-inch base height, and 2-inch width would have a volume of 18 cubic inches.

Wedge Volume Formula
The equation is:
V = ½ × l × w × h
Where:
- V represents volume
- l denotes length
- w indicates width
- h signifies height
This formula essentially calculates half the volume of a rectangular prism, as a wedge forms a triangular cross-section.
Calculating the volume of a metal wedge with dimensions:
length = 10 cm, width = 4 cm, and height = 6 cm: V = ½ × 10 × 4 × 6 = 120 cubic centimeters
How to Calculate Volume of a Wedge?
To accurately measure a wedge’s volume:
- Measure the length (l) – Distance from front to back
- Determine the width (w) – Distance across the base
- Find the height (h) – Vertical distance from base to top
- Apply the formula: V = ½ × l × w × h
Consider a construction wedge measuring 15 inches in length, 5 inches in width, and 8 inches in height.
V = ½ × 15 × 5 × 8 = 300 cubic inches
- Industrial Wedge: Length: 20 cm, Width: 8 cm, Height: 12 cm, V = ½ × 20 × 8 × 12 = 960 cubic centimeters
- Craft Project Wedge: Length: 5 inches, Width: 2 inches, Height: 3 inches, V = ½ × 5 × 2 × 3 = 15 cubic inches
- Architectural Support: Length: 40 cm, Width: 15 cm, Height: 25 cm, V = ½ × 40 × 15 × 25 = 7,500 cubic centimeters
- Laboratory Sample: Length: 3 cm, Width: 1.5 cm, Height: 2 cm, V = ½ × 3 × 1.5 × 2 = 4.5 cubic centimeters
- Construction Wedge: Length: 30 inches, Width: 10 inches, Height: 15 inches, V = ½ × 30 × 10 × 15 = 2,250 cubic inches
What is Wedge Volume?
A wedge represents a geometric solid formed by two triangular faces and three rectangular faces, essentially creating a prismatic shape with one tapered end.
