MOA Calculation Formula

The standard equation for converting MOA to inches is:

Inches = MOA × Distance (yards) × 1.047 ÷ 100

Where:

  • MOA = The number of MOA adjustments.
  • Distance (yards) = Distance to the target in yards.
  • 1.047 = Conversion factor for 1 MOA at 100 yards (1 MOA ≈ 1.047 inches at 100 yards).
Inches = (MOA × Distance) / 100

Where:

  • MOA is the angular measurement
  • Distance is in yards
  • Result is in inches

For metric calculations:

Centimeters = Inches × 2.54
Millimeters = Centimeters × 10
  • ¼ MOA scopes: 4 clicks per MOA
  • ½ MOA scopes: 2 clicks per MOA
  • 1 MOA scopes: 1 click per MOA

Example calculation for 3 MOA at 200 yards:

Inches = (3 × 200) / 100 = 6.282 inches
¼ MOA clicks = 3 × 4 = 12 clicks

How to Convert MOA to Inches

  • Determine the MOA value you’re working with, Know your target distance in yards, Remember the conversion factor (1.047)
  • Apply the formula: Multiply all three numbers together and Divide by 100
  • Interpret the results: The final number represents the linear measurement in inches

Converting 3 MOA at 250 yards

Inches = (3 × 250 × 1.047) ÷ 100
Inches = 7.8525 inches
  • 4 MOA at 100 yards: (4 × 100 × 1.047) ÷ 100 = 4.188 inches
  • 2.5 MOA at 300 yards: (2.5 × 300 × 1.047) ÷ 100 = 7.8525 inches
  • 1.5 MOA at 500 yards: (1.5 × 500 × 1.047) ÷ 100 = 7.8525 inches
  • 3.5 MOA at 150 yards: (3.5 × 150 × 1.047) ÷ 100 = 5.49675 inches
  • 1 MOA at 400 yards: (1 × 400 × 1.047) ÷ 100 = 4.188 inches

What is MOA?

MOA (Minute of Angle) is an angular measurement equal to 1/60th of one degree. It’s widely used in shooting sports and rifle scopes because it provides precise adjustment values. At 100 yards, 1 MOA equals approximately 1.047 inches, though it’s often rounded to 1 inch for practical purposes.

The linear size of 1 MOA increases proportionally with distance, making it an effective system for long-range shooting and scope adjustments. Most rifle scopes use either ¼ MOA or ½ MOA click values for precise targeting.
