Draw Length Formula

Basic Draw Length Formula:

Draw Length (in inches) = Arm Span (in inches) / 2.5
Draw Length = (Arm Span - 15) ÷ 2
Draw Length = (Arm Span ÷ 2.5) + 1.5

Draw Length with Hand Placement Adjustment:

In some cases, adjustments may be added based on bow type or shooting style:

Adjusted Draw Length = Basic Draw Length + Adjustment Factor

(The adjustment factor is typically 0.5–1.0 inches for recurve or compound bows.)

How to Measure Your Draw Length

  • Wall Positioning: Stand against a wall with your arms stretched out completely, forming a perfect T-position with your body
  • Wingspan Measurement: Have a helper measure from the tip of one middle finger to the other
  • Mathematical Calculation: Take your wingspan measurement in inches and divide by 2.5

If your total wingspan measures 72 inches, your calculation would be:

72 ÷ 2.5 = 28.8 inches draw length

What is Draw Length?

Draw length is the essential measurement in archery equipment that determines how far you can comfortably pull your bowstring while maintaining proper form. It’s like your archery DNA – uniquely matched to your body proportions and shooting technique. This critical measurement influences everything from your shooting accuracy and shot consistency to your physical comfort while shooting.

A proper draw length allows you to achieve the ideal anchor position (where your drawing hand consistently touches your face) and maintains proper back tension throughout your shot. Getting this measurement correct is absolutely crucial because an incorrect draw length can lead to poor shooting form, reduced accuracy, and potential physical strain over time.
