Dog Garlic Toxicity Calculator
Our dog garlic toxicity calculator computes risk level based on the amount of garlic consumed relative to the dog’s body weight.
A 20-pound dog consumes two garlic cloves, the calculator can quickly determine if this poses a significant health risk.
Dog Garlic Toxicity Table
Dog’s Weight (lbs) | Garlic Dose (toxic level) | Equivalent Garlic Cloves (approx.) | Risk Level |
---|---|---|---|
5 lbs | 0.5 grams | 1/6 clove | High Risk |
10 lbs | 1 gram | 1/3 clove | High Risk |
20 lbs | 2 grams | 2/3 clove | Moderate to High Risk |
40 lbs | 4 grams | 1 1/3 cloves | Moderate to High Risk |
60 lbs | 6 grams | 2 cloves | Moderate Risk |
80 lbs | 8 grams | 2 2/3 cloves | Low to Moderate Risk |
100 lbs | 10 grams | 3 1/3 cloves | Low Risk |
Dog Garlic Toxicity Calculation Formula
The formula for calculating garlic toxicity follows this structure:
Toxic Dose = (Weight of garlic consumed in grams) ÷ (Dog's weight in kilograms)
The critical threshold is 15-30 grams of garlic per kilogram of dog’s body weight.
A 15kg dog consumes 100g of garlic:
100g ÷ 15kg = 6.67g/kg
In this case, while concerning, it’s below the toxic threshold but still warrants veterinary attention.
How to Calculate How Much Garlic is Deadly to Dogs?
To determine potentially lethal garlic amounts, follow these steps:
- Convert your dog’s weight to kilograms (divide pounds by 2.2)
- Multiply the weight by 15-30g to find the toxic range
- Consider the form of garlic (fresh, powdered, or cooked)
For a 40-pound dog:
- Convert to kg: 40 ÷ 2.2 = 18.18kg
- Toxic range: 18.18 × 15 = 272.7g (lower threshold)
- 18.18 × 30 = 545.4g (upper threshold)
- Small Terrier (10 lbs): Weight in kg: 4.54kg, Toxic range: 68.1g – 136.2g of garlic
- Medium Labrador (65 lbs): Weight in kg: 29.5kg, Toxic range: 442.5g – 885g of garlic
- Large German Shepherd (85 lbs): Weight in kg: 38.6kg, Toxic range: 579g – 1,158g of garlic
- Chihuahua (6 lbs): Weight in kg: 2.72kg, Toxic range: 40.8g – 81.6g of garlic
- Great Dane (140 lbs): Weight in kg: 63.6kg, Toxic range: 954g – 1,908g of garlic
What is Dog Garlic Toxicity?
Dog garlic toxicity occurs when canines ingest harmful amounts of garlic, leading to oxidative damage in red blood cells. This results in hemolytic anemia, where the body destroys its own red blood cells faster than it can produce new ones. The compound N-propyl disulfide in garlic triggers this dangerous process.
